Orthokeratology: What is it?

It is an applicative technique that permits the elimination and the reduction of the myopia and astigmatism effect using gas-permeable contact lenses.

Orthokeratology uses a series of particular personalised contact lenses that can be used when you sleep and taken off when you wake up in the morning; this lenses consent a clear eye-sight all day long.

The result is a better vision without lenses.

Today, thanks to the use of COMPUTERIZED CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY and special design tools, it is possible to apply hortocheratologic lenses according to the real corneal structure of every single individual. The result is a drastic reduction of tests, times of adjustment and comfort without precedents. The program foresees, already from the first meeting, a practical test of lenses, followed by a control of visual acuteness without correction. This will permit to the subjects, once taken off the lenses, to appreciate the improving of the visual acuteness. The largest visual improvement happens rapidly in the first days; hence it requires frequent checks. The duration of contact lenses is 12 months, after which they have to be replaced with a pair of new ones.

Contraindications

According the D.M. of February 3rd, 2003, it is important to verify the absence of contraindications by the oculist, in order to avoid damages for eyes.

Effective

Orthokeratology is a non invasive treatment and the change of corneal curvature is obtained gently.
Short-sighted people by up to 5-6 dioptres can obtain a natural vision (WITHOUT CORRECTION) of 10 tenths all day long. These results are obtained for myopias up to 3 dioptres in very few days or in slightly longer periods for the higher myopias. Naturally you can also wear the hortocheratologic lenses during the day as normal rigid contact lenses with the plus that, when you remove them, eyesight will remain perfectly clear.

Maintenance of results

After you have achieved the best possible results, you should keep on wearing the lenses anyway, progressively reducing use-time while maintaining a clear eyesight.
When you stop using the contact lenses, it is naturally necessary to correct myopia with your glasses.
